Catch of the Day at Bass Pro Shop.

Faith loves the outdoors so she spends a lot of time at Bass Pro Shop. After work she headed to Spanish Fort, AL to find a special fishing pole...a pink one of course!

When she arrived there she was intrigued with all the toys they had out front. First she checked out a fishing boat. It was loaded with everything a fishing chic could ever want. Then she went for the Bad Boy four wheeler. "That would be fun on some of the clay trails down here in the South", she thought to herself before spotting something for her sister Hope. A truck that had her nickname on it...Red Head.

The night was a little chilly so she warmed herself by the fireplace just inside before she went on her quest for her "lucky" pole. After she found just the right one she had dinner at the restaurant and then went to look at the kayaks. Of course the trip would not be complete without getting some homemade fudge in the General Store.

On her way out she met a very nice guy, Darrell. He said he had a brother named Darrell for one of her Sisters. He had just purchased a boat and they discussed fishing techniques and live bait vs lures. Could this be her "catch of the day"?

Faith takes a New Years Eve Kayaking Trip

Gracie and Hope have a younger sister, Faith. Faith is quite the outdoors lover. She shines the most when experiencing all the senses of the outdoors. Kayaking is one of her favorite things things to do. On New Years Eve she went with some friends kayaking at Magnolia Branch Wildlife Reserve located in Atmore, AL. She had never been there before so she was quite surprised at how much the campground had to offer. It is nestled deep in the woods and makes you feel like your are light years away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Surely one of Atmores's best kept secerts. Located on Big Escambia Creek there are acres of pristine timberland and scenic waterfront. It is one of the many Creek Indian Enterprises run by the Poarch Creek Indians and only minutes from Wind Creek Casino.

The Tribal leader, Billy was there to greet everyone and volunteered to shuttle the group up creek to make it easier for them. Along the way he showed them some of the many things to do there, Horseback Riding, Zip Lining, Tubing, Camping, Fishing and many more. He talked of the native plants and trees that were along the way and told some Indian "Tall Tails".

When they arrived at the take off point they found the water level was just right with a few rapids and it was crystal clear. The scenery was as beautiful as Billy had described it to them. They stopped a little ways down the creek, beaching at a sandy spot and hunting cool and unusual stones. Faith's dog Bratt, who also went along, went for a swim and driftwood was collected along the way in the rushing water and strapped to the back of a kayak. "This piece will look great in the garden", she thought to herself as everyone else was giving her down the road for dragging it home. It was sorta sad when the paddle came to a close because everyone was having so much fun.

After loading up the kayaks and equipment they had a wonderful cookout in the campground. Hamburgers and Hot Dogs were enjoyed and Billy stopped by to see if they needed anything else. He showed them where there was some great firewood to collect for later. After filling their bellies they relaxed fishing in the lake. Two catfish were caught but the fun was just having the pole in the water and watching the bobber float around with all their worries.

Around the campfire everyone had a taste of marshmallows and shared their New Years Resolutions which probably will be broken but it is nice to try anyway. Fireworks were seen all along the drive home. It was a great way to start the new year.

Christmas in New Orleans

Gracie's sister, Hope, decided she needed a break for a few days right before Christmas. Things are always crazy about that time and she wanted to escape the norm and maybe enjoy some Christmas Cheer in a different City.

She was looking for decorations, music, shopping, and great food...humm what better place to find that than in New Orleans. She was able to talk two of her close friends to go with her, well it did not take much to get them to go along. The weather was fabulous and the girls were looking forward to having another new adventure together.

It is a short drive to New Orleans from the Sunshine State so they arrived in the afternoon. After checking in their room they headed through the French Quarter gazing in each window to see if they wanted to venture inside. The Quarter was festive with all the Christmas decorations and the girls almost had sensory overload at all there was to see, smell and hear. A few new Christmas ornaments were purchased at one of the unique boutiques and of course pralines were sampled. They decided to try Acme Oyster House for dinner. There is always a line there but the wait went quickly. Dinner was consumed and the girls headed to the Hotel for rest.

The next morning they headed off to Cafe Du Monde for coffee and beignets and some people watching. Then they were off again to do some sight seeing and more shopping. Well... Ok...they had more pralines too. After all this was a mini vacation. They strolled along Jackson Square and enjoyed the sidewalk artist before they decided to take one of the bus tours of the City and Cemeteries. So much history was learned about New Orleans and oh how beautiful were the homes in some of the historic areas. After the 3 hour tour they enjoyed a Cajun meal of beans and rice and headed back to rest. The walk along Canal Street was magical that night as 3 friends walked down the sidewalk singing Christmas Carols to the music of the lone trumpeter on the street.

The next morning they toured 2 of the many Plantations along the Mississippi River. Mint Juleps were served on the veranda and one last Cajun meal was had before heading home again.

Hope returned home refreshed. She was relaxed and comfortable during her trip wearing her New Orleans Saints tee shirt and Necklace she purchased from her sisters favorite on line boutique, Inklings Designs. www.inklingsdesigns.com

Murder at the Juice Joint

Gracie gets invited to a roaring 20's Murder Mystery Party. About 20 of her friends got together for a night of murder, mayhem and "The Mob". About the party:

Gracie goes to Bellingraph Gardens

Gracie always celebrates the holidays with a trip to Bellingraph Gardens to see the awesome display of Christmas lights along with her friends. Jack Frost was nipping at her nose, so she dresses warm and is very stylish in her Santa hat and Rhinestone China Necklace that she got from her favorite on line boutique, Inkling's Designs.
The hour drive to Mobile went by pretty fast as she anticipated the beautiful lights as she drove. She arrived a little early and was hungry so she decided to have something delicious at a restaurant on Mobile Bay. Fried shrimp and oyster platter caught her eye as oysters are in season during the month of December. The seafood was fresh as it always is on the Gulf Coast .
Arriving at the Gardens, there was no waiting line as she arrived right at dusk. The lights were just starting to twinkle, she smiled with anticipation, and proceeded on her adventure. She wandered along the beautifully lit paths and awed at the magic of the glorious sights. So many new displays of lights were added this year. She particularly enjoyed the "under the sea" display and the swans on Mirror Lake. Stopping for a hot chocolate break, she enjoyed watching people and talking with some of the other guests in the gardens. As she listened to the children, she could not help but chuckle at the things kids say. It seems that everyone was enjoying their evening as much as Gracie was. She finished her tour of Bellingraph Gardens with the Nativity Scene, which is the reason for the season. There was one last stop - shopping at the gift shop.
On the drive home she smiled to herself with a heart full of love and joy so glad that she was able to enjoy this special place with her friends again this year.

Every year in October the Humane Society puts on Barktoberfest in Seville Park. There are booths where you can purchase things for you dog, booths where you can adopt several breeds of dogs, booths where you can have your dogs picture taken and so much more. This year was much bigger than last year and the doggie costumes were even more elaborate. Here are a few pictures to make you smile.

Host a Clothing Swap

Have you ever heard of a clothing swap? Well let me tell you that it is a way to get a new wardrobe for FREE! I recently hosted one and here is what I did.

You want to pick a date and send out invites about 2 to 3 weeks before the actual swap. This gives the guests plenty of time to clean out their closet. I did evites and fliers to friends that I did not have their email address. Be sure to include several friends with different sizes so there is something for everyone. I also included candles and bath products and some housewares too.

What to put on the evite:

What better way to improve your wardrobe. Let's face it, we are all on a budget these days. Come join the fun and get the opinion of other women on what looks good on you. Bring a min. of 5 items. These items can be any type clothing, shoes, accessories, jewelry. Please make sure the items are clean pressed and in good wearing condition. Please bring a friend or two. Please be ready to enjoy what girls do the best: FASHION AND FELLOWSHIP!! Did someone say SHOES! Refreshments will be provided along with a lot of laughter. Be sure to put the time, date, place and who is hosting it.

I cleaned out my closet, a time or two, and on the night of the swap I had food and wine ready when the guest arrived. I set up places to hang and place clothing, shoes, etc with signs so everyone knew where to put their goodies. When they came in everyone put their clothing in the proper piles and started socializing and eating. This went on for about 45 min to an hour which gave everyone a chance to look over the clothing selection and try on what they might like. (the shopping experience) I had a couple of full length mirrors and spare bedrooms/bath for people to change in. Opinions were shared and we helped each other pick out things that would look good on each other.

Now the fun began. I had everyone draw a number from a hat to see who got to pick first. This eliminated any disagreements there might have been over someone wanting the same outfit. Each one of us picked one item. After each choosing of clothing, we put the numbers back in the hat and drew again. That way everyone had a fair chance to get a few of their first pics. After a few rounds and all the good stuff was gone then it was a free for all to take anything that might be left over. Actually this was a good thing because as everyone went through the racks and piles again they saw things that they did not see the first time around and they got more good stuff.

Friends went home with large bags of FREE clothing that night and what was left went to the Goodwill or Women's Shelter. It sure has been fun seeing friends enjoying their new outfits that once hung in your closet, never worn.

I hope you have success with your own clothing swap. My next clothing swap is scheduled for March. Be there for tons of fun and free stuff!

Shine on Harvest Moon by the Sea

When I got home from work on Monday night my hubby asked me if I wanted to go to the beach to watch the sunset. After a Monday at work....well DUH!!

It was another beautiful sunset. I have seen a bunch but I can never get tired of seeing them. We also had the added bonus of seeing the Harvest Moon rising over the Gulf about the same time as the sun was setting. What a way to relax and loose all your stress on a Monday evening. Sunset, moon rise, feet in the sand, listening to the surf, and of course... birds. I even found some shells. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Homemade Pizza and Movie Night Party

I have a friend that makes the best homemade pizza crust and sauce so we decided to have a pizza party and make our own individual pizzas. First you invite your friends and have them bring their favorite pizza toppings. Line up the toppings and go down the line to make your masterpiece. Bake and voila the best pizza ever made to your liking. We also had homemade ice cream for dessert. You are too full at this point to eat any popcorn while enjoying the movie.

Alice in Wonderland Theme Bridal Shower

Last weekend I was privileged to host an Alice in Wonderland Theme Bridal Shower for a very special Lady. I love being creative so making the centerpiece and decorations was so much fun. We had a Mad Hatters Tea Party with all the wonderful tea sandwiches and goodies and everyone wore a hat. Much fun was had by all.

Tropical Storm Lee

Living on the Gulf Coast we are no strangers to Hurricanes and Tropical Storms. Hurricane season starts June 1st and ends November 30th. This year we have been blessed not to have already had a major storm. The end of last week, Tropical Storm Lee decided to visit the Gulf Coast and drop a little needed rain on our Labor Day Weekend. I love the beach and my favorite time to go is in the winter months or when there is a storm so after Church this morning we headed straight to the beach. There were still a lot of tourist in the main area and some wind surfers in the more private areas.

Southern Stuff...Fried Okra

Most of you are familiar with breaded fried okra but how many of you have ever had okra fried without the breading? Let me tell you it is as habit forming as popcorn and potato chips. As a matter of fact it has the crispiness of them and with salt sorta taste like them also.

First you want to pick and wash your okra.

Dry on a paper towel.

Then slice off the tips and ends of the okra pod.

Then you want to slice them into small pieces.

Place them into a skillet with hot oil. Be careful not to let the hot grease burn you. They will pop when put into the oil.

Cook until nice and brown. Drain on Paper towel.

Add salt and munch away. They are crispy on the outside but still soft on the inside...Ummmm. Delish and with no extra bread to add calories to your diet. Now you know.

A Trip to the Blueberry Farm

Have you ever been blueberry pickin? I am blessed to live near a blueberry farm so I had to take advantage of that. Here is the skinny on blueberries... They are just 80 calories per cup. They contain Vitamin C, Fiber, Manganese and they are an antioxidant.

Getting out to the country is always refreshing. As I pulled into the driveway of the farm you could hear the birds singing right away. I got my bucket, that were already lined with plastic bags by the way, and walked out to the field. The bushes were overflowing with the little blue delights. In just a few minutes my bucket was overflowing from just one bush. I don't even know how many I popped into my mouth. They sure were delicious all warm from the sun.

At 75 cents a pound, I got my berries out of the bucket and onto the scales. There was no charge for the ones consumed. On the drive home all I could think about was blueberry muffins, blueberry pancakes, blueberry pie, blueberry smoothies and just popping them into my mouth for a snack.

In the kitchen, I proceeded to prepare my berries for the freezer. Since you don't wash blueberries before you freeze them there really wasn't a lot of prep work to do. I spread them out on paper towels to absorb any moisture that was in the bag. Then I spread them on a cookie sheet to pop into the freezer. This will freeze your berries individually. After a few minutes I move the berries off the cookie sheet and put into freezer bags for later use. Of course I left some out for a smoothie and to share with my African Grey, Meshack. He gobbled them up so fast. What a pleasure to watch.

A Stop at the Farmer's Market on a Summers Day

There is nothing like going by the local Farmer's Market on a summer morning. It brings back memories of being barefoot in the garden, planting, weeding and harvesting. Of course you have to sample the freshly picked bounty on the spot to fully enjoy the freshness while it is still warm from the sun.

The first thing I notice when I arrive is all the beautiful colors. Then the wonderful aroma hits my nose and I can hardly take it all in. I walk around with my basket wanting a sampling of everything but knowing I need to choose only a few items. I go to the honey shelf and grab a large jar of local honey. Did you know that eating local honey helps with allergies? I use honey almost everyday.

It has been very dry in this part of Florida so I was surprised to see how well the shelves were stocked. I carefully selected my veggies, took one last sniff and went home to do some cooking.

Does that bring back any memories to anyone else? Just makes your mouth water doesn't it?

Summer Nights...Bands on the Beach

In the Summer months, every Tuesday night on Casino Beach, Santa Rosa Island and Cat Country host Bands on the Beach. Bringing their favorite beverage and a boxed dinner or snack, hundreds gather to hear a different band each week and hang out with family and friends or to swim, fish or just visit.

Reunion Band was this weeks gig. They play predominantly rock oldies and R & B from the 60's. I heard several of my favorites that brought back memories from days gone by.

Our Beach Wedding

Living on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico, I chose to have an intimate beach wedding with no stress. Of course I had my list of things that I wanted but the most important thing on my list was fun.

Although we live in Pensacola, I love Mexico Beach and it holds some sentimental memories for me so that is where I wanted to be married. It is about 3 hrs from P'cola so no biggie. Tom got us rooms at the El Governor on the beach and we had a few friends come over with us. By over, I mean geographical speaking. We went West down the panhandle of Florida to the forgotten coast.

Now let's talk about the other things I had on my wedding wish list.

First of all, "The Dress".

I wanted a long blue sundress that was flattering. Something that I could wear anytime during the summer. I did not want a dress that would just hang in my closet...gotta get some use out of whatever I purchase. I found one on Ebay for less than $40.00. Very comfortable also. I had previously purchased a beautiful cross necklace at the Women's Conference in Pensacola and a friend from Church made me some earrings to match. I was thrilled.

Now being the Southern Gal that I am I wanted to be able to feel the sand between my toes as we said our "I DO's" so although I always "NEED" a new pair of shoes, it was not necessary to purchase a new pair. That was another important thing on my wedding list...barefoot on the beach.

Now to address the flowers. I chose Hydrangeas, for several reasons. I love the blooms and foliage. You can dry them and they keep a long time, They come in Blue. Blue flowers are associated with comfort, peace, serenity, devotion, hope and stability. We went to Home Depot and purchased a couple of Endless Summer Hydrangea bushes that were full of blooms. I planted the bushes in my garden to remember our wedding for years to come and I cut the flowers off the bushes and had enough for bouquet, cake top, table arrangement and my hair.

Next, the Cake. I wanted a very simple cake but it had to taste good! My wonderful neighbor baked the best cake ever. Mint Chocolate with Irish Cream filling...OMG! We froze the top layer as tradition requires until our first anniversary but I doubt if it will make it that long with my sweet tooth.

I wanted the surf and the birds as my music and we chose a 9:30 AM time because it was not only cooler but that allowed more time for the "fun" after the wedding. The birds and surf were perfect pitch and did not disappoint me one bit. One of our special friends married us and I picked up shells on the beach to remember the spot where we were blessed.

Next Adventure: Wedding Cruise.

My husband tells everyone that he took me on a cruise for our honeymoon. It impresses them until they see the pictures. We went kayaking near Apalachicola. We love the outdoors and our wonderful friends made some lunch after the ceremony and off we all went on a 3 hour tour. It was beautiful and we made many memories on that trip which is another story in itself. I am still laughing when I think of that kayaking trip.

My final wish was to have dinner on the beach at sunset. We stopped by a local business that did catering and ordered dinner. We returned from our kayaking adventure just in time to enjoy the beautiful sunset, wonderful dinner and delicious cake! What a wonderful day. Well see for yourself...

Kayaking at 5 Rivers in the Alabama Delta today was very interesting. The weather was nice, the sky was blue and you could actually smell Spring in the air. I sat a few times and just listened to the wind blow through the cat tails and sea oats. It was a much needed "nature fix" for me. As I paddled along I enjoyed watching many interesting critters either feeding or sunning themselves along the shore but the most interesting one of all was Loretta, a cross eyed opossum wearing a St. Patrick's day outfit. The day ended with a picnic, a trip to Bass Pro Shop and a banana Moon Pie. Only in the South!

A Visit to a Tall Ship...Peacemaker

Does't this just want you to sail away somewhere you have never been and go on the adventure of a lifetime?

What a great thing to do on a Sunday afternoon after Church but to tour a tall ship in the Plaza de Luna in downtown Pensacola. The 150-foot ship was built in Brazil and ended up in Savannah, Georgia. I had the pleasure of touring this beautiful Flagship the first of this month. The Peacemaker in now docked in Panama City, FL. I hope you enjoyed the pictures. I just had to share these.

I love antiques and have been collecting since I was 19. Ha, some of the things I got new back then are now considered vintage! While visiting Mexico Beach a few years ago, there was a couple that owned a 1921 Model T at Sharon's Restaurant. I did not have my camera at the time...which was a first by the way, so I did not get pictures. Every year when I return to Mexico Beach, I look for Geraldine. Well this year I got lucky and found her again and got the pictures I wanted years ago. The couple that owns her has an amazing story. He is the 2nd owner of that gem of a car. Ford says you can get it in any color as long as it is black. If you are ever in Mexico Beach look for her and have a wonderful conversation with the owners about their story. Enjoy the pics.

I have never witnessed someone home burn to the ground. Last week I witnessed just that. It took a fast 20 minutes and it was all gone. A lifetime of memories for a family, a loving home. The elderly gentleman who was the owner, lived there with his son and grandson and their dog. They all got out safe and I heard him say, "you just never know what life will bring your way". We need to live each day as it is our last. Be kind to others and enjoy what blessings we have...today. You just never know what tomorrow will bring.

A Day at the Dog Park.

After Church on Sunday, it was such a beautiful day that one of my friends suggested we go to the dog park. Well my girls have never been to a dog park so I thought how cool it would be for them to socialize with other dogs. After all, dogs are pack animals and my dogs love each other and some of my friends dogs. We arrived at the park and they had an area for swimming...well I knew better than to head in that direction....I know how they react to the beach. Not very pleasant for either of us as they hate the water and sand. Next was the BIG DOG area....I could just hear the dogs barking to each other..."snacks being served today??? goodie!!!" Isabella only weighs 2.5 pounds. They did have a separate area for small dogs. It was double gated although mine could scoot under it. Inside the area were lots of tennis balls, Frisbees, fresh water and shade. What a wonderful place for pups to romp and sniff. There were squirrels in every tree to chase and bark and lots of room for running. Well I have Chihuahua's...they ran the fence and barked at anything that moved. One Gentleman did not even bother to bring his dog into the area. There were several different kinds of small dogs there, most with easy going personalities and Isabella and India did finally warm up and make some new friends. After a while we left and went to the Happy Pig Restruant downtown. It is dog friendly with the best BBQ. There were dog treats and water for the four legged visitors at the front door. A good time was had by all.

Pirates Cove, Dogs and Dolphins

Pirates, Dogs and Dolphins "OH MY"!

This past Saturday I was invited by a couple of friends to go out on their boat. It was a beautiful day on the Gulf of Mexico and Pensacola Bay. We did some crusin and ended up at Pirates Cove where they were having their annual Dog Olympics. Pirates Cove is a dog friendly Restruant and bar where your dogs don't have to even be on a leash. The neighboring dogs swim over to beg for their supper and play on the beach and water. It is a fun atmosphere and we witnessed the burger eating contest. Tiki won again this year with a 6 second timing. I really enjoyed watching the dogs and kids play in the shallows. We then took up anchor and went to Shuckers Restruant for some delish oysters...they are in season now! Took a walk at the Wharf in Orange Beach, AL and headed back to Pensacola. On our return we were blessed with a dolphin sighting. They swam under the boat and all around in a feeding frenzy that was great to watch. There is nothing more relaxing than being on the water, sun in your face and a gentle wind blowing. I hope you enjoy some of the pictures. Smile, beauty is all around us, no matter where we live.

Living in Pensacola, home of Naval Aviation, you see a lot of men and women in uniform so it is easy to know who to thank for your freedom. I have done it on many occasions in town and at airports when traveling. One of the things I had on my "bucket list" was to participate in a welcome home to our WWII Vets. I got that opportunity last night when the Flight to Honor Vets arrived back from Washington DC after a day trip to reflect at their memorial. This is a program Nationwide that will fly US Vets, free of charge, to our Nations Capital and back with a guardian for the day. There was such pride standing in that crowd of hundreds of family, friends and locals that were there to do the same. Flags were given out upon arrival and many had flowers, balloons and signs. ROTC, Navy, Marines, Army and Air Force were in dress uniform, all of us waiting for the landing of that special plane. Excitement was building as the first Vet rolled down in his wheelchair. There was cheering, thank yous, flag waving and lots of tears that evening. I felt so honored to be a part of such a special moment. It is something that I will remember for a long while and I will be attending as many of these as I can in the future. Please get online and see where the city nearest you is that participates in this program and try to attend. You won't be the same afterwards. We live in the land of the free and the home of the brave because of these Vets!

Tis The Season...Mardi Gras Season that is!

Down here on the Gulf Coast up thru the Mississippi River, we all celebrate Mardi Gras.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" or "Shrove Tuesday". It is the last day of feasting before Lent and this year it falls on Tuesday, February 24 th.

The "Season" is typically celebrated from Epiphany thru Ash Wednesday with Colorful Parades, Floats, Beads, Trinkets, King Cakes, Masks, Balls, and Moon Pies! Krewes plan these events all year long with fund raisers etc.

You may not be able to come to New Orleans or Mobile so I have created this beautiful Wreath to celebrate Mardi Gras no matter where you may live. You can find it on my website @ www.inklingsdesigns.com.

Well Halloween is Friday and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. I went out into my neighborhood this weekend and took a few pictures of how people decorated their stoops for the Fall Season. We don't have many porches just front entryways. I was very surprised to see that there were only a few people that had the fall spirit this year. My parrot and buddy "Poppy" helped me with my Fall Decorating this year! Here is what it looks like around my house this time of the year.

I just returned from a wonderful long weekend in Mexico Beach, FL. Southern Cruiser Bike Club had a bike rally there this weekend to earn money for St. Jude Hospt. in Memphis. We did some wonderful riding along the Gulf Coast and the views from our hotel room were beautiful. We rode to St. George Island past Historic Apalachicola. The weather was beautiful and the seafood was fresh! I just wanted to share the beach with you! Hope you enjoy it. Most of these pictures were taken from the back of Tom's Harley, except the ones on the beach.

What a cute Princess!

I took my girls, Isabella and India to a private showing of Beverly Hills Chihuahua in Gulf Breeze. It was a sold out showing and they even had to turn people and dogs away. There were over 100 dogs and owners that attended. It was put on by the Chihuahua Club of Gulf Breeze and the proceeds went to the Humane Society. They had wonderful door prizes and prizes for the 3 best dressed pooches...I guess you know I took home one of those prizes...a beautiful PINK collar and leash by Swarovski. I also won a wonderful door prize gift basket from one of the Vet's office in town. It was filled with lots of goodies for my babies. The movie was cute. Isabella slept through it but India watched the whole thing. A good time was had by all.

Well it is fall in the south and I just wanted to share with some of my friends all over the country what it feels like down here. There is not much of a chill in the air but there is not much humidity either. That is a blessing. We still have a lot of flowers blooming until after Christmas and the sun shines most of the time. There is cotton to pick and pecans and citrus to harvest. What is fall like in your part of the country?

This past Saturday was Pensacola's annual Barktoberfest. It is sponsored by the Humane Society. Lots of adorable dogs and their matching owners. I took my girls, India and Isabella for some free treats and a lot of attention. I heard one of the dog owners tell her pouch: "See sweetie, I told you everyone else would be dressed up". I laughed so hard I almost wet myself!!! What a great way to bring out the smile in everyone there! Hope you have your smile on today.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! This disease has touched almost everyones life either through a family member or friend. My Mother is a Breast Cancer Survivor! I have designed Greeting Cards to help women remember that early detection is so important. This is the first one in a series. Others will follow soon. Send one to a girl friend or family member to keep in touch and remind them to do monthly self exams and always have an annual Mammogram. It could mean your life!

Last week, Make Mine Pink had a wonderful Retreat in Williamsburg, Virginia. On a free day my roomie, Patty and I went to Jamestown to see our country's early history. There were two Museums there along with the Indian Village, Fort and docks where the 3 ships brought over the settlers. They also had a 30 min. movie of the story of John Smith and how the Indians helped the settlers survive during rough times. It was all very interesting. Everyone was dressed in period clothing and explained all of our questions. Much fun was had!

The Make Mine Pink Retreat in Williamsburg, VA was over the top with information, meeting new friends, and goodies!!! Words can not describe all the wonderful things that went on every minute. Joyce Lucas and her family are absolutely the most wonderful folks you will ever meet.

I left on Tuesday to head to North GA to meet my ride, Dianne. We became instant buddies and earned the nick names of Thelma and Louise..Brad Pitt and all!!! We took our time on the journey to Virginia and made some new friends along the way. One of the towns we had many adventures in was Salisbury, NC. Here are a few pictures of the most darling General Store we shopped in.

Oh, you want to hear the rest of the story??? Well let's just say..."What happens in Salisbury, stays in Salisbury" As we journeyed back home through North Carolina, we did notice that there were no billboards with our pics on them!!! Whew...LOL

When coming home from work the other day, I found this adorable Pup on the side of the road. He was a friendly fellow waving at everyone that rode by. I asked him where he got his costume and he replied..."I have always had it. It was in my closet". He let me take his picture and I would have loved to have taken him home with me but he already had a great family! They live across the street so I get to see this cutie often. Aren't I blessed? I do love my neigborhood.

Jim's Story:

Inka asked me to provide a short story for her blog about my stem cell transplant experience. First of all I'd like to thank Inka for blogging about Steve because, on a whim a couple weeks ago, I searched Google for a key date, January 8th, and a few other related words. Google eventually displayed Inka's June 29 blog post about Steve. I was both elated and surprised when I realized Steve was my donor. It also became a delicate situation in my mind because the National Marrow Donor Program promises their donors total anonymity. They only allow contact one year after transplantation and then only if both parties agree. But can you blame me for wanting to know who saved my life? Not knowing Steve or Inka, I Emailed Inka asking her if she would ask Steve if he was interested in establishing contact with me. I wanted to respect Steve's privacy but I also wanted to thank him in person for what he did for my family and I. About 2 hours after sending the Email to Inka, Steve phoned me! I'm so happy he made that decision because now I've had a chance to thank him. In today's high tech world, I suppose the NMDP should inform both donors and recipients, if they really want to remain anonymous then they should not provide their stories in a blog or other website! I have blogged about my experience starting last November. Steve could have very well have Googled and found me to! Since I have a blog, if you have the curiosity, please check it out for my posts. You can browse the post archive by month. Look for the January dates when I was hospitalized for the transplant procedure. I tried to post every day during that month since I got progress updated daily from my 3 doctors. Here is a brief summary of how I came to need new bone marrow stem cells and how my life was saved by the kindness of a total stranger.How a Hero Saved My Life By the end of 2005 I was tired a lot. When going to sleep on my side I could hear my heart pulse whooshing in my ears. I couldn't exercise because I'd get out of breath very fast. On January 26, 2006 I saw my primary doctor. He said I looked pale and had me get a complete blood count. That afternoon he phoned me at work to say he needed me to get a ride to the hospital immediately. My hemoglobin count was 40% of normal. Well, that explained being out of breath! Over the next 24 hours I stayed overnight in the hospital and they transfused me with 5 pints of blood to bring up my hemoglobin level to 80% of normal. I felt a lot better. They performed a bone marrow biopsy (ouch) and delivered the verdict, I had Myelodysplasia (MDS), sometimes called Pre-Leukemia. MDS is Greek (like most medical terms) for 'Abnormal Marrow'. My marrow stem cells were laying down on the job, not producing critical blood cells to keep me ticking. Unlike Leukemia though, MDS progresses slowly. Over the next 20 months I pondered the only cure, a Stem Cell Transplant (SCT). There were no drugs that would end the nightmare. The eventual endgame was what they call 'patient morbidity'. I needed red blood transfusion from donors every few weeks. It got worse as the MDS progressed. By last summer I needed 2 pints of donated blood every 2 weeks. I was trying to avoid the stem cell transplant and prayed for the MDS not to transform into Leukemia. I had a family that needed me and I enjoyed being with them very much. I gave my doctor the go ahead to do another donor search. A search in 2006 yielded a 'partial match'. That was another reason I chose to wait. The summer 2007 search came back with what they called an 'exact match', so my family and I decide to go forward with a SCT. I quit my job in October to prepare, undergoing many tests including a bone marrow biopsy, and getting my affairs in order. The survival rate for a SCT is not great but it was my only hope. Other than needing transfusions often I was not very sick, no infections. I enjoyed last Christmas with my family. I checked into the transplantation unit on January 2 and started the process. While I was getting 6 days of chemo that would kill my existing marrow stem cells, hero Steve flew across the country to Baltimore and got one shot per day that would stimulate his own marrow to produce so many 'wonderful and working' stem cells. So many new cells were produced that there was no more room for them in the marrow, they were pushed out into his blood. On January 8, I got one day of no chemo while Steve, in Baltimore, got hooked up to 2 lines in his arms and they filtered his blood through a special matching that filtered out a good quantity of his new stem cells. They flew his cells across the country that night in a cooler and delivered them to my hospital the next morning. On the morning of January 9th my hospital 'scrubbed' his donation, filtering them again to remove some of his platelets and white blood cells that were also in the donation. In the afternoon, the 2 head nurses came in the room with a big round orange bag holding Steve's donation (pictures in the blog). They hung the bag from the chemo tree next to my bed and hooked a line to the 'Groshong' catheter that entered my chest. In less than 1/2 hour Steve's cells were in my system. For reasons probably only known to God, these cells travel through the blood stream until they reach the inside of the major bones, the bone marrow. Once there, they 'seem to know' that this is the place to settle down. That night I had the only adverse reaction I've had to Steve's cells. I got a few hours of chills and fever. My body was confused. The next day those symptoms were gone. Then the waiting began. Every day I'd get a blood test. Every day my white blood cell count was zero. I had NO ability to fight germs! Around 12 days after the transplant new white blood cells started showing up! Hallelujah! During this time my blood type changed from A positive to Steve's type, B positive. Over a ten day period they had to transfuse me with approximately 14 units of red blood cells, and a large quantity of platelet cells. My old blood cells were dying off. When the 10 day period was over, my transfusion days were over! Steve's new cells were now mine and they were cranking out all the blood cells I needed! Hallelujah again! The team of doctors and nurses were very surprised at how quickly Steve's donation grafted in my marrow! They let me go home earlier than usual, January 27th. Ever since then I haven't had so much as a sniffle, no infections. My Graft Vs. Host (GVHD) side effects have been ever so slight as my body seems to have had almost no problem with the new cells. In fact, it's the other way around. If there were to be a problem it would have been the new white blood cells having a problem with my body. It has been very smooth sailing! My doctors are all smiles. I am all smiles. My family is all smiles.However, I'm not out of the woods yet. The remaining danger for me comes from my immature new immune system. It will take another year, and a whole set of childhood re-vaccinations, before my immune system can be considered totally ready for prime time. I have to exercise special care not to expose myself to obvious sources of pathogens. I am so grateful to Steve and the organization he belongs to that helped him make this a miracle for me and my family. I thank the NMDP for having a bone marrow/stem cell donor database. I thank my family. I thank God.

The Southern Cruisers Riding Club had a National Ralley in Memphis this past weekend. I met members from all over the country. Our main Charity is St Judes Hospital and we toured that while in Memphis. Did you know that it takes 1.3 million dollars a DAY to support that hospital? Yes a DAY! Did you know that when a patient is referred to St Judes that the Hospital picks up ALL of the expences including flight to Memphis and return visits after cured? I learned so much about this remarkable place. It is such a blessing to those who enter here. Our club as a whole raised almost enough to support the hospital for a day this year. It sure makes me proud to be a member. If you are looking for a good cause, please remember the children.
